Top Level Domain (TLD)

An extension, or Top Level Domain (TLD), is the uppermost level class of Domain names. The domain name is separated into numerous TLDs. The extensions .com, .net and .org are also know as "generic" domains as these domains are not affiliated with any country. Such generic domains are unrestricted—which means anybody from any corner of the world can register as many .com, .net or .org domain names as they may want.
ICANN has now approved 7 top level domains .aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name, .pro. The best part about these new top domains is that they are formally documented and therefore they will "work" all over the world, in any browser or other software.
